Fly Tying: More Soft Hackles

Based on the success of these soft hackles on the last Rocky Ford trip, I tied up a handful of them. I'm also thinking they would be just the ticket at an early opening stillwater I've got my eye on.

I added a little bling to the Pheasant Tail and Quail. Always tweaking.

Pheasant Tail and Quail
Hook: dry fly #14
Thread: black
Body: brown pheasant tail fibers
Rib: thin gold tinsel
Thorax: Adams gray Hareline Dubbin
Hackle: dark quail

I also used the thin gold tinsel on the Yellow and Quail instead of the gold wire. Want to keep it in the film.

Here is the quail I'm using.

It's from our abundant local quail.

I didn't go out and shoot this quail. It was given to me by One Eye the cat, who is no longer with us. Thanks again, One Eye.

  1. Nice work Jim. The soft-hackle is so effective, I don't know why it's not fished more.
