Don't Be Late for the End of the World

New Hydrothermal Vent in the Shoshone Probably Doesn’t Mean the World’s Ending

Amazing what a new hydrothermal feature, in one of the most geologically active regions on the planet, can invoke among folks these days.

A new vent opened in the bed of the Shoshone back on March 25th near Cody, damned unusual though apparently not unprecedented; it’s all over alternative and social media these days and wasreported in the Billings Gazette here on the 11th; screen cut of the article to the left.

As interesting as the concept may be, and despite the breathless ‘end of the world’ reporting covering the phenomena, our money is on the caldera NOT blowing in the next few weeks. (Try a web search for ‘shoshone river boiling’ if you need some Chicken-Little-oriented entertainment…)

Chi Wulff Calls Them Out

Kudos to Chi Wulff again. They hit the nail on the head with a story on access rights, James Cox Kennedy, the Ruby River, Ducks Unlimited, and what is all too often business as usual: big money throwing its weight around, and vested interests failing to have the uh, "eggs" to stand up to it. The losers when that happens are all of us who put a higher value on wild lands and waters than a dollar amount.

Chi Wulff on Playing God in Yellowstone

Mark McGlothlin has written an excellent post over on Chi Wulff about a thorny fisheries management issue facing Yellowstone National Park. In "Playing God in Yellowstone: Soda Butte Brookies and Hybridized Cutties" he explores the controversy over whether to rotenone 38 miles of Soda Butte Creek to eliminate non-native Brook Trout.

"A couple of days ago I was arguing discussing fishing the Henry’s Fork with a somewhat mentally constipated friend from Salt Lake City. His basic premise was that it was more or less impossible to find rainbows on the HF these days bigger than 20 inches as ‘they’ve been fished the hell out’.

I’m happy to offer proof that my friend is quite actually ‘full of poo’ as SWMBO would say."
