In a landscape as immense as the Canadian Rockies, it takes a human figure to help set the scale. In the LAND OF EMPERORS, the mountains rule. And while humans may appear tiny and insignificant, their experience venturing into that landscape is far from meaningless. The journey promises new perspective. From the striking geometry of precipitous peaks forming Canada's hydrological divide to the vastness of retreating icefields and glaciers, it can be an inspiring experience for anyone wandering through this region. This short film reminds us of the striking beauty of the Canadian Rockies and our place, as humans, within those magnificent peaks.

Shot in the beautiful mountain parks of Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. Over 80 miles and 20,000+ feet of elevation gain were traveled on foot to collect these visuals. Primary locations include Kananaskis Country, Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, Kootenay National Park and Mt. Robson Provincial Park. To comply with current regulations, the quadcopter was not operated within the national parks.

Blood. Sweat. Tears. Joy. That's what this spring was for me. The miles, the grind, the failing, the epic days missed, the lack of sleep, the jubilation, the friendships strengthened, and the time away from my family. And when the chasing was all done...wondering, was worth it all?

Heck yeah it was.

I had three goals this spring: Get a tornado on time-lapse, capture the best footage I possibly could, and chase as much as my schedule would allow. That ended up totalling 18 chase days. 20,000 miles driven. Almost 60,000 time-lapse frames shot. Nine total states. Hours and hours and hours of editing. All between April 15th and June 15th.

And the tornado? Not only did I get one, but I got six more. On April 15th, the very first day out, I saw two tornadoes in the Texas Panhandle. May 9th was Wynnewood and Sulphur in Oklahoma (both in this film), as well as Trinidad on June 13th in Colorado. And while most tornadoes will be obvious in the film, you'll have to use a keen eye to spot the first two, which appear at 2:08 and 2:13. The Wynnewood tornado, which you will see at the very end of the film, was one of the most surreal moments of my life. I was so focused on keeping up with the storm that day, that I barely realized that I had captured what I'd been working so hard to get. I texted my wife a few photos and simply said "Baby I did it". It wasn't until she responded "Babe, it's beautiful. I'm so happy for you" that I completely lost it - live stream going on in the truck, people watching, and tears streaming down my face.

But that's how much this spring meant to me, and how hard I was going. Most of the time exhausted. My typical routine would be to leave Phoenix sometime in late afternoon, drive all night, sleep an hour or two in the truck and then chase the next few days. And then drive home all night again. I did whatever I could to to minimize the time away from my family. Heck, I once even shot a wedding all day, left the venue, and drove all night to chase. I didn't want to miss anything this spring.

What's awesome to me is that some of my best stuff came from marginal days, where it took some effort and crazy luck to get sick storm structures. Those were the surprises - amazing clips worthy of the final product despite the chase day starting out subpar. Combined together with everything else, I think it's some of my best footage to date!

Technical note...this film marks the first time I used my Canon 5DSR and 11-24 for time-lapse, which I bought right before the spring started (Thank you Martin Heck for the help!). I'm not 100% sure of course, but I believe the tornadoes in the film may be some of the first ever captured in 8K resolution. The 50 megapixels that camera offers was huge for being able to zoom into certain shots and still maintain fantastic quality and sharpness. Couldn't be happier with that beast. I also used my trusty 5D3 for the tighter shots, with the 35mm, 50mm or 135mm.

I have to mention Kerry Muzzey here...he has surpassed being kind to me. This is the 3rd or 4th time he's donated a song to one of my projects and I'm forever grateful. His music is powerful, haunting at times, and always, always perfect for the story I want to tell. This year I knew right away that "Found" was the song I would use. There are a lot of names to thank which are listed at the end of the film. I owe them all so much for helping me this spring. Nowcasting, making me turn around when I was headed to Montana, teaching me about forecasting, helping me choose the right new camera, editing input, and just being good friends. I am very blessed to have some amazing people around me!

Most of all to my wife, Jina. She knows...every year I'm gone longer. I'm sure next year could be worse. But through it all, even when it's really tough, she's always right behind me. Making things work when I'm away. There are never enough words to cover how amazing she is. But she knows and I know - this film wouldn't happen without her.

This unplanned collaborative effort between myself and Bozeman, MT based photographer Pat Clayton www.fisheyeguyphotography.com took place on a recent hiking trip in the Greater Yellowstone region. We brought fishing gear, but never made a cast. Instead we spent a couple of days watching this incredible spawning ritual.

After a full day of shooting above water stills, I decided to capture some above-water video to go along with Pat's underwater images. Pat's underwater trout photos are superb. These Cutthroat Trout were in the peak of the spawn, bold and showing all their colors. Pat has a deep appreciation for native species and the fragile environments they inhabit, as do I. Wild Cutthroat face a never-ending threat from competing species, hybridization, habitat loss and destruction, and climate change.

Unfortunately, there's just not many places left like this.

Director Amon Barker grew up exploring the mountains, valleys, and desserts of New Mexico and developed a passion for the outdoors. He was drawn to photography in order to share his experiences with the landscape. Along the way he met others with a similar connection to the environment even when living very different lives.

When we came up with the concept for the Human Nature short it was very simple. We wanted to create powerful images of the natural world that would remind viewers of their connection to the land and it's personal meaning to them. We hit the road on a series of production road trips and the story of the edit unfolded through our journey. None of us will forgot the moments along the way.

Living in the PNW definitely has its perks. I don't think I'll ever get tired of this beautiful area. From the age of 17, I have been traveling across the Pacific Northwest taking timelapse. This is a compilation of the 10,000+ photos shot over the last 2 years throughout countless backpacking and camping trips. 

This world was so beautifully created, and it reflects our God in every aspect.

I hope that by watching this video you are inspired to think about these questions: What is beauty? What separates us from other creatures to marvel at sunsets, sunrises, mountains and waterfalls? Was this really created for us to enjoy?

TEMPUS FUGIT 2 , the sequel of my first timelapse movie „Tempus Fugit“ (https://vimeo.com/69844748) took me three years to shoot. I was visiting a lot of popular and well known places around the world but quite remote and deserted spots, too, in the last three years. Sometimes I had to hike for hours with heavy equipment to come to the spots. You will find locations in Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and USA (California, Utah, Washington, Oregon).
The final movie consists of roughly 6.500 frames and had been cut out of 100 timelapse sequences with more than 30.000 frames altogether.
I am quite happy to have the exceptionally gifted composer Phil Rey on board again with his epic masterpiece „Lion Heart“.

Taking a dreamy and unique approach to adventure cinematography, Dapp and a hand picked crew ventured into the wilds of Chile and Argentina carrying the latest in 4K cinematography in order to bring you Patagonica. Covering over 6000km of Patagonia’s back roads and mountain passes, the team carried out an unprecedented production pace by carrying everything by hand, and producing world class cinematography during the transformational rigors of existing in the mountains.

In order to craft a true cinematic narrative in his signature way, Dapp began editing Patagonica 7 days into a 28 day venture. On the dusty back routes of Chile’s Carratera Austral, the spirit of the adventure was sewed into this piece, music was chosen. The ‘preface’ beginning of the film itself is actually boarded out to a famous lecture about dreams and adventure moulding to the spirit of insight even after the narration form was removed.

Shooting timelapse has taught me to sit back and take in the world around me. After six years and thousands of shots captured, I’ve seen some special and memorable events in our skies. No matter how dramatic the location, the sky holds the power to make a good view great, and to mesmerize us with the wonders of the world - within our atmosphere and beyond.
This collection of unique moments was captured from mountaintops to rooftops to coastline, at locations including:

Polar Night

Every year in late November, above the Arctic Circle at 70˚ North, the sun disappears below the horizon and it does not reappear for almost two months
This period is called Polar Night. But even if the sun is gone, it is not totally dark. There is always some light during the day. Sometimes this light can be amazing, and you have to be there to understand how beautiful, strong and colorful it can be. But there are also days where the light is grey and colorless.
This is my first time-lapse project. As a still photographer I needed a new challenge. Since I live above the Polar Circle in Northern Norway, I chose Polar Night as my theme. My goal was to show the beauty of the light in this period.
Taking around 80 000 images in total, I used around 25 000 images for this project in addition to the two minutes of film clips. All footage are shoot locally in the Lyngen Fjord area not more than 50 km from my home. I did this in the period of November and December 2015 and January 2016.
The soundtrack is "Immanuel" by Tony Anderson, licensed from the Music Bed.
